'The Three Stooges' Trailer Arrives

The marketing campaign for the Farrelly Brothers The Three Stooges is that everyone will "get stooged" when the comedy hits theaters on April 13, 2012.  I guess that's just like "getting smurfed", whatever the hell that means.  The Farrellys went out of their way to bring in relative unknowns, Will Sasso (Mad TV), Sean Hayes (Will & Grace) and Chris Diamantopoulos (24) to resurrect the iconic, funny exploits of Larry (Hayes), Moe (Diamantopoulos) and Curly (Sasso), and the trio do not disappoint.

Farrelly Brothers' 'The Three Stooges' Coming Next Spring

Moviegoers can look forward to "getting stooged" next spring, whatever the hell that means.  The Farrelly brothers' take on The Three Stooges will trip and stumble into theaters on April 4, 2012.  And thanks to THR, we know the adventure that lays ahead for Larry (Sean Hayes), Moe (Chris Diamantopoulos) and Curly (Will Sasso).

The numbskull brothers will try to save their childhood home, but instead get wrapped up in a murder mystery, before they somehow land their own reality TV show.

Sean Penn Back in 'The Three Stooges'

In the words of some cackling, mustachioed villain from an old melodrama, "Not so fast!" Sean Penn ditched the Farrelly Brothers several months ago, choosing to address things in his personal life (like his divorce from Robin Wright) and feeling the need to take a break rather than go after one of the more curious post-Oscar performances in recent memory. You remember: Sean Penn as Larry Fine from The Three Stooges.

Well now, that's back on. Bobby Farrelly tells The Boston Herald, “We got him back. He always said he wanted to do it after, you know, taking care of his family.” The film will go in front of camera in August, pushing it back from its current (but always tenuous) November 2010 release date. That will give the Farrellys time to find an actor to play Curly, who, if I were guessing right now, would be Zack Galifianakis. I mean, once you think about it, it's hard to think of anyone else, isn't it? Jim Carrey was rumored, and it's a bad rumor at that, but he is not playing the key role.

Paul Giamatti Replaces Sean Penn in 'Three Stooges'

Sean Penn walked away from acting for a short time earlier this summer. As part of his year off, he vacated the role of Larry in the upcoming Three Stooges movie. That's probably for the best, though. Now co-director Peter Farrelly tells The Boston Globe they've replaced Penn, but that another Stooge still needs to be cast.

Paul Giamatti, I think everyone would agree, is a far better choice to play Larry. His comic sensibilities are much more in tune with this project than Penn's recent history would indicate. If Farrelly isn't just speculating but is, in fact, reporting that the Oscar nominee has signed on, that's a big step up, and one that could really stabilize a movie that frankly isn't too easy to justify on its own merits. Benicio Del Toro is still lined up to play Moe, and that should be fine. Kind of an unexpected choice, but it could work. Moe is more of the straight man anyway. But Curly has always been the toughest Stooge to replace - hell, even the Stooges couldn't do it successfully 50 years ago - and Farrelly says that information linking Jim Carrey to the role was inaccurate. That's also for the best.
