Unfortunate 'Mean Girls 2' Poster and Trailer

I'm not gonna lie to you, I liked Mean Girls.  A lot.  Tina Fey's script was smart and witty, the cast was great, and being a sophomore in high school during its 2004 release it seemed like everyone I knew felt some kind of connection to it.  And, after watching it on TBS a few nights ago, it's still just as funny.

That being said, it was only a matter of time before the lovely execs at Paramount decided to give the world a sequel.  But as well liked as the original was, it definitely deserved better than this.

Review - 'Megamind'

Megamind Starring Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Jonah Hill and Brad Pitt Directed by Tom McGrath Rated PG

If you are looking for a movie to take your kids to this weekend, Megamind is a smart choice. If, however, you were hoping to be entertained too, chances are you are going to be disappointed.

For the most part, Megamind is what you've come to expect from a Dreamworks animated film. It has all the typical bells and whistles, including pop culture references (including nods to President Obama's "Hope" poster, Donkey Kong and Marlon Brando's performance as Jor-El in the 1978 Superman film), well-known pop songs (including "Bad to the Bone," "A Little Less Conversation" and "Highway to Hell") and big name celebrities providing the voices. What the film lacks, however, is originality and humor.

The story borrows heavily from the Superman mythos. In this version of the story, both Megamind (Will Ferrell) and Metro Man (Brad Pitt) were alien babies put inside of space ships and sent to Earth as their planets were about to explode. Metro Man, who was blessed with superstrength, flight and heat vision, landed on the doorstep of a wealthy family. Megamind, who has blue skin and a giant head, but no superpowers, landed in a prison and was raised by the inmates. They both went to the same elementary school, where Metro Man was beloved and Megamind was an outcast, so Megamind finally decided to stop trying to be loved and instead embrace the role the world had already cast him in - the villain.

Six New 'Megamind' Clips

When they started releasing the teaser trailers for Megamind, I was skeptical. I was also iffy on it's premise. However, my mind was changed when they released the first five minutes of the movie, and this additional footage continues to make it look very entertaining.

They mostly expand on the story. We see some interaction between Megamind (Will Farrell) and Metro Man (Brad Pitt), and we see how Tina Fey and Johan Hill fit in.

Stanley Tucci Directing Meryl Streep and Tina Fey

Stanley Tucci is going back behind the camera to direct Meryl Streep and Tina Fey in the comedy Mommy & Me for Sony, and that has "sizable mid-budget hit" written all over it.

Streep, somehow, has moved from arthouse and critical darling to a very bankable star who still gets praise from the press and her peers. Well, she is the best actress we've ever seen, even though specific evidence of being that good is more difficult to come by these days. Great in Doubt and just as good in Julie & Julia, which was lighter fare but still a big challenge. Streep is also one of the few stars of any variety that can show up and a $100 million return happens like magic.

Box Office - 'Date Night' Surprises 'Clash of the Titans'

Another potential black eye for the 3-D craze that's sweeping...uh...board rooms throughout Hollywood: Clash of the Titans couldn't hold on for a second week at number one, losing over half its audience from it's so-so $60 million debut, trailing Date Night by a few hundred thousand dollars.

Because what we're looking at right now are just estimates (from Box Office Mojo), there's a chance Titans will be adjusted once the final numbers are announced on Monday afternoon. But it shouldn't be this close. With as much marketing as Warner Bros. dumped into Clash of the Titans and with a huge lead in the number of theaters and the higher ticket prices, this probably shouldn't have happened.
