‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ New 3D Trailer

The news surrounding Sony Pictures’ re-boot of the Spider-Man franchise just continues to roll in.   Just days after our own Mario Melidona reported on the release of the “Official Synopsis” and associated press conference, Sony launched this 3D trailer online for their upcoming July 4^th summer blockbuster.  The Amazing Spider-Man is directed by Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer) and stars; Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Sally Field, Denis Leary, and Campbell Scott (The Exocism of Emily Rose).

Tobey Maguire is Searching for Bobby Fischer

If you haven't ever seen it, watch the ABC News feature by Jeremy Schaap about (and featuring) the iconoclastic chess legend Bobby Fischer. It's a pretty convincing case that Fischer was out of his gourd by the end of his life. While Fischer's biggest successes occurred before the age of 30 or so, it's what happened after that period that remains so noteworthy. Fischer became isolated and reclusive, not playing competitive chess for nearly 20 years.

He would be denied re-entry into the United States upon his return to chess, for playing a match against Boris Spassky in Yugoslavia, which was verboten. So, in his last 15 years, Fischer bounced from country to country and began firing off a steady stream of anti-American and anti-Semitic comments, despite the fact that he was both American and Jewish. He also, um, publicly applauded the September 11th attacks. And now, Tobey Maguire will play him in a bio-pic. The great thing about Maguire in this role is, even though he's in his mid-30s now, he can still believably play much younger. That could probably go the other way, too, although not into Fischer's 60s. But you can delve into the early parts of the chess master's self-imposed isolation.

Rumor Patrol: Tobey Maguire Still Not Bilbo Baggins

More rumors have been ciculating that Tobey Maguire is back in Guillermo del Toro's plans for The Hobbit. The Sun, a British tabloid that has traded in some pretty outlandish stories over the past few years, says that with his time as Spider-Man suddenly behind him, the seas have parted for Maguire to play Bilbo Baggins.

Here's the problem: del Toro himself has just shot the rumor down. Over at The One Ring, where the director is a registered member and frequent visitor, GdT commented on the latest round of idle talk, writing simply, "Not true."

Raimi Walks on 'Spidey 4', Sony to Reboot Franchise

It appears that the Sam Raimi era is over for Spider-Man. Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Spider-Man 4, which has been twisting in the wind for months, has been pulled off the table by Sony. Raimi walks away from the franchise, as do the stars, Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst.

"Sony Pictures co-chairman [Amy Pascal] and Columbia Pictures' Matt Tolmach decided they didn't want to replace [Raimi] and instead chose to reboot the franchise," writes Nikki Finke. "Insiders also tell me that Tobey Maguire heard the news in a phone call with Amy today. I'm told Tobey wasn't upset."

Tobey Maguire: 'Hobbit' Rumors "Not Accurate"

Yesterday, we cast some suspicion on a rumor that Tobey Maguire was in discussions to play Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit. It seemed a little too good to be true, and also an unnecessary reach for a big movie star when the title is the most powerful force in that equation. And now, Maguire says the rumor is bogus.

“I have not met with [Guillermo del Toro]," Maguire told Heat Vision. "We don’t have any near future plans. I don’t know if something got misconstrued or miscommunicated but the source was not accurate at all.”
