Tobias Skeptical About 'Arrested Development' Movie

The back and forth on an Arrested Development movie is back again. Or forth. Whichever, the latest update is that it may not happen. That's what David Cross says, anyway.

Cross, who played famed Analrapist Dr. Tobias Fünke on the show (a combination of analyst and therapist), tells TV Squad what many of us may have feared, even with the constant reassurances from Jason Bateman and Will Arnett that the movie would come together. "Way too much time it's been (since the show ended)," he admiited. "I mean, there's so many people involved. Everyone's doing their own thing, you know. And everybody's aged. It's just not going to happen."

Will Arnett: 'Arrested Development' Shoots This Year

I remember the one time I interviewed Will Arnett (for Blades of Glory, so we're both real proud of that connection), and even then he was talking about filming an Arrested Development movie. That was about a year after the show came to an abrupt end, and it seems like ever since, this "movie" has been "in the works."

Arnett tells ComingSoon that - brace yourself - the Arrested Development film will happen. Of course, next month will be the four-year anniversary of the end of the show, and I'm not sure if the wait (five years or so if it happens quickly) is a good thing or not. "I'm so glad you asked that," Arnett said facetiously after being asked for the umpteen thousandth time about the movie. "It's very refreshing. We are working on the movie right now, yeah," he confirmed. "We don't have a completed script yet, but it's forthcoming and we're going to make the movie this year."

'Arrested Development' Script Finally Being Written

We finally have concrete news about the Arrested Development movie, namely that creator Mitch Hurwitz is developing the script. He's working with one of the show's executive producers, James Vallely, on the screenplay, and Hurwitz has been named the director, according to a new Reuters report.

Now, we have been on this story for well over a year now, and the headline is pretty much always the same. In fact, the Vallely announcement isn't all that new, and I think most people assumed the script was already in some stage of development. So, for those of you who did make an ass out of u and me, this might actually be a step backward for the time being. However, Hurwitz says he wasn't going to start writing a script unless/until all the cast members were locked in to return. Particularly troublesome in that deparment was Michael Cera, who until mid-year had said he didn't see much point in a movie. But Year One sure did prove to be a fruitful project for him, didn't it?

Will Arnett, Mitch Hurwitz Join Forces on Non-'Arrested Development' Comedy

It's too early to say what impact this might have on the proposed-but-by-no-means-charging-forward Arrested Development movie, but that show's creator, Mitch Hurwitz, is teaming with co-executive producer Jim vallely and the notorious GOB, Will Arnett on another film.

There's no title yet and no director for the trio's project, but The Hollywood Reporter says Arnett would play "a rich Beverly Hills jackass who falls in love with a charitable tree-hugging woman who can't stand his lifestyle or values." I'm a big admirer of Arnett's, but I think I prefer him as a supporting character than as a lead. I don't begrudge him trying, though. And his star has certainly been on the rise since Development went off the air between voicework in animated projects, guest stints on TV, and loads of features films (not all of them terribly memorable), so it's hard to say there's no demand for his services.
