Three Most Buzzworthy Films Of 2011 Yet To Be Released

 

With Fast Five sky-rocketing doing $83.5 million this past weekend, and blockbusters like Thor (which came out today) and Green Lantern just around the corner, it looks like the box office is coming back alive in 2011. A few good films have been released so far this year, including Win Win, Source Code, Rango and Unknown. There is still plenty of buzz for what is to come in the year 2011. New Trailer for Woody Allen's 'Midnight in Paris'

Legendary filmmaker Woody Allen takes us to the most romantic city in the world (I'm told) for his newest comedy Midnight in Paris.  The film's trailer shows Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams as a couple, who are  traveling with family to Paris, France on business. 

Of course, each person is enjoying their own little Paris experience, especially Wilson who continously separates from the family after midnight to explore the "magic".  Meanwhile, McAdams seems more engaged by the presence of Frost/Nixon star Michael Sheen and his fond appreciation of the fine arts and night life the city has to offer.

Indie Movie Review: 'You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger'

You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger Starring Josh Brolin, Naomi Watts, and Frieda Pinto Directed by Woody Allen Rated R

In Woody Allen’s You Will Meet  A Tall Dark Stranger,  the actors’ minute understanding of shame and need has called into being a new word- "craugh"- a combination of cringing and laughter, characterized by the sinking feeling caused by watching people in a deep state of humiliation that is also funny. The cringe worthy quality of the self deluding, narcissistic and altogether real-ish characters made me close my eyes and grasp onto the arm of the critic next me, just as if I was watching a horror flick or a psychic Guantamo Bay for divorcees, aging lawyers and artists. 

The most craugh -worthy acting work is done by Brolin, who delivers a hale and hearty sliminess that makes the heart break and the skin crawl.  Hopkins evinces a desperation that is refreshing in light of his more well-known and menacing characters and Watts’ memorable scene with Antonia Banderas gives awhole  new dimension to the word shame.  Gemma Jones' work  is the most noteworthy as she smashingly plays a matriarch whose skittering and brutal neediness evoke a suicidal Miss Jane Marple.

Woody Allen's 'You Will Meet a Mild, Boring Trailer'

Woody Allen's You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger may be excellent, but it sure looks like the Woodman is drifting back into Melinda and Melinda territory based on this trailer. A better cast, sure, but I detectthe vague aroma of leftovers.

Maybe it's seeing Anthony Hopkins without his shirt or seeing Josh Brolin about four months overdue for a haircut or the narration, which, while a novel blast from the past, doesn't really zing. Whatever it is, I was looking forward to Tall Dark Stranger much more before I saw the trailer. True, Woody is enjoying a comeback, but his comedies have been very sporadic since Deconstructing Harry and his dramas have been much, much better. I know he's coming off Vicky Cristina Barcelona, but that's the exception to the rule for his post-Mia Farrow comedies. Watch the trailer for yourself; I don't think it looks horrible, just average.

Another Cool Poster for Woody's 'Tall Dark Stranger'

I liked the first poster for Woody Allen's You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger and now there's a new one. Ditto. And I love that they're using the strongest color combination in marketing - red, white, and black - so it's eye-catching, and then it's got a really nice throwback design.

Enlarge it, I dare you This is, of course, the Spanish poster for the film, which hit IMP Awards yesterday. Much like the first one, a playing card sketch, there isn't a whole lot to the new Tall Dark Stranger poster, but sometimes less is more, and because the title of this film brings to mind a vision by a cheap psychic huckster, I think an air of mystery fits very well here.
