David Duchovny Wants 'X-Files' Movie For 2012

David Duchovny still wants a third X-Files movie, having achieved peace with the impact his character of Fox Mulder had on his life and career. You'll remember, Duchovny wanted to stop shooting the show in Vancouver in favor of Los Angeles, and he and Gillian Anderson both kind of walked away from the series (and the first film) not looking back.

But the cast and creator Chris Carter reunited to make X-Files: I Want to Believe, which was a bit of a letdown, even though it had a modest budget allowing the film to become profitable. So a third movie, now that everyone is re-invested in the lore of the original series, seems inevitable. “As far as the X-Files movie I’d like to do next, if we get a chance to do it, would be a return to the heart and soul of the mythology, which is the alien-oriented conspiracy," Duchovny tells The Daily Beast.

Gillian Anderson Says There Might Be More 'X-Files'

This is a long distance rumor, but I think you might be surprised by how valid it probably is. In a recent Croatian interview, Gillian Anderson talked openly about the prospects of a third X-Files movie, saying that Chris Carter and company "talked about maybe doing it in 2012."

But wait, you say, didn't the second movie lose money? Oh no. Far from it. In fact, it only cost about $30 million, so even though it wasn't a blockbuster, it doubled its budget by the time all was said and done. And when you factor in how much money Carter, Anderson, and David Duchovny got from the TV show, so long as it's generating any kind of cash, they can keep those going in perpetuity if they feel like it. And unlike when they were working on the show's final couple of seasons, it sounds like everyone involved took a page out of the Eagles reunion and now can't wait to work together again.

One More Round for Mulder and Scully?

Few thuds at the box office have seemed resounding this year than The X-Files: I Want to Believe. Sure, it's been nearly a decade since the show left the air, but the sequel made $130 million less around the world than its predecessor ($67 million) and made $10 million less in the United States during its entire run than the first X-Files movie made in its opening weekend.

Having said that, the movie made money internationally, and now that the DVD is coming out on Tuesday, it may not have been the big disaster we thought, although audiences sure didn't clamor for it in the U.S. when it was in theaters.So logically, there's talk of another movie. Writer-producer Frank Spotnitz told MovieWeb where the series would have to go if given another chandce. "If we were to make one more feature," said Spotnitz, "I think we would definitely have to deal with alien colonization." "There's a date that looms very important in X-Files mythology, which is December 2012," the producer explained. "I think after the DVD comes out, the studio will decide whether they want to roll the dice on another X-Files feature."

Chris Carter Still Wants to Believe in More 'X-Files' Movies

Though he may have trouble getting the money to make it after the lackluster production of The X-Files: I Want to Believe, Chris Carter, the creator of the series and the director of the new film, tells IGN he's already putting together ideas for a third movie. "We had really good fun doing this movie -- we have high hopes for it and we just want people to like it," says Carter. If people do want to come and see it we'll certainly be talking about another movie." So far, of course, people haven't come to see it; the movie made a paltry $10 million in its debut last weekend. But supposing it finds an audience overseas or on home video, Carter is open to the idea of resurrecting the alien stories that marked the show's successful run on Fox.

"We love the alien storyline too, but we felt coming back this time -- when a story like this was not only true to the series but allows us to focus on Mulder and Scully more, you don't have to deal with all the complications in the alien storyline. But if there were to be more films -- and we're not at all taking it for granted that there will be -- but if there were that's something we would definitely want to get back too...There's a date in the X-Files mythology -- 2012 -- that is very important. We'd certainly love to do something with that!"

The reference to 2012 has specific meaning to fans of the show; 12.12.12 is when the alien invasion is supposed to happen in Mulder and Scully's world. And yes, that would probably bring out more casual viewers of the show than this current standalone project has. I wouldn't get my hopes up for a third film if I were, and if your hopes were already up, I'd do something to bring them back down. Isn't thinking about about baseball and nuns supposed to do that? Wait...that's for something else.

Box Office - 'Dark Knight' to $314 Million in Ten Days

I thought something was amiss when The Dark Knight only made $23 million on Friday. That didn't set it up very well for a $75 million weekend, which is what we predicted on Thursday. It's also what it made, as it turns out, so the fastest movie to $300 million continues to show momentum, breaking records nearly each day. What's the difference between $75 million and $65 million, where it appeared the movie might wind up this weekend after a fairly soft Friday night? I don't know; why don't you ask The X-Files if it would've been better off making $20 million this weekend instead of $10 million. Yeah, the second X-Files movie could only muster $10 million in three days, according to Box Office Mojo, opening in fourth place. The saving grace for that film is a very reasonable budget. This should still manage to make a profit in domestic ticket sales. Step Brothers, on the other hand, was anything but a flop, debuting with $30 million against the biggest 10-day behemoth in the history of motion pictures. That's quite a feat, actually. Mamma Mia! finished in third place and Journey to the Center of the Earth completed the top five. Getting back to The Dark Knight, it took ten days to make it to $314 million, nearly a full week faster than the old record. It's also within a million bucks, based on the estimates, of being the highest-grossing movie of the year. In ten days. At this rate, the $400 million mark is probably no more than another week away, which is hard to imagine. Since most movies do start slowing down after week three, due to new competition, reduction in theater counts, and the fact that most people see movies in that time frame, it'll be hard to guess what that big final number will be.
