'Zoolander 2' is Almost a Sure Thing

"What is this? A center for ants? How can we be expected to teach children to learn how to read... if they can't even fit inside the building?!"

The first Zoolander wasn't that highly rated.  But like it or not, any fan of comedies will agree that there's some great lines in the film.  That's why I'm very excited to hear that Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller read the script, liked it, and we'll probably do it sooner rather than later.  

Early November we reported that Viacom will make the film.  However, we weren't really sure who would be involved in the project.  Says Wilson, "I just saw him (Ben Stiller) now and we’re talking about doing another Zoolander movie."  When asked about the film going into production, Wilson responded,

'Zoolander 2' to Launch in Phases

"I'm pretty sure there's a lot more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good looking. And I plan on finding out what that is."

There are so many memorable quotes in this movie and many years after its release, it gained a cult following.  Still, in order to appeal to a larger audience, Viacom is looking to remind people of Derek Zoolander through a series of animated digital shorts.  Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Zoolander 2 is gaining steam and will be developed sooner rather than later.

Blue Steel Set to Return: Script for 'Zoolander 2' Completed

It's been a long and rocky road for Zoolander 2. We reported about the troubled sequel over the summer, which Paramount initially rejected, but Ben Stiller went to Twitter to reassure fans was still in the works. Paramount also reportedly passed on Anchorman 2 at the same time and word was that the studio was unhappy with the initial script for Zoolander 2, based on their mysterious arithmetic models that can supposedly determine what movies will be a financial hit. (Which is admittedly better than the old studio method, which involved monkeys and a dart board.)

MTV recently caught up with Justin Theroux, who is co-writing the screenplay with Ben Stiller and will reportedly also direct. Theroux said the script is basically finished and the plan is to have the film in theaters in 2012.

Stiller Updates 'Zoolander 2' on the Twitter Machine

Just like Will Ferrell shouldn't have waited to get started on an Anchorman sequel until his career started to cool off, Ben Stiller really should have pushed for Zoolander 2 about five years back. I mean, he was able to make Starsky & Hutch a big hit.

But Stiller waited and he's gone through The Heartbreak Kid and seems able to only prop up sequels to franchises established when he was a much bigger draw. So the Zoolander sequel took a step back earlier this year, but now Stiller Tweets that it's back on. Incidentally, nothing better than some Stiller Tweets in your bag at Halloween.

Ben Stiller Tweeting the Demise of 'Zoolander 2'?

First Anchorman, now Zoolander 2? Ben Stiller Tweeted this weekend that a sequel to the dumb model movie is anything but a sure thing: "Ron Burgundy and Derek Zoolander looking to appear in sequels. Both men destitute, without means or intellect to fund their own comebacks."

Both movies face one certain obstacle: Anything more than five years is an eternity for a sequel to a comedy. Anchorman has the added hurdle of Will Ferrell's uncertain box office performances. And even though Zoolander wasn't massive at the time, its stature has grown ever since, and could be a hit without much trouble. Or so you'd think.
