New 'Inglourious Basterds' Clip with "The Jew Hunter"

Although it was the marquee names of Quentin Tarantino and Brad Pitt that predictably grabbed all the headlines at the Cannes Film Festival for Inglourious Basterds, it was Christoph Waltz who had something to show for it after the fact. Waltz took home the Best Actor prize at the prestigious film festival, which instantly put him closer to the spotlight as the film gets ready for its release on August 21st.

The Austrian actor has been at this racket for over 30 years, and is the kind of veteran presence Tarantino also seems to cast in his films. Not surprisingly, these guys tend to get plenty of good dialogue and wind up with awards or nominations. There's a brief clip online now featuring Waltz, portraying a Nazi officer, as he explains to Pitt and B.J. Novak why he's earned the name "The Jew Hunter."

New 'ThunderCats' Concept Art

We know already that Transformers is big business. We're about to find out if G.I. Joe can accomplish the same thing. And then down the road we'll see a new He-Man movie and ThunderCats, as well. Movieline has scored a glimpse at new concept art from that film, and then ruined it with the most gawdawful website watermark I've ever seen.

Beyond that, though, you do get a good look at what the movie might look like. Movieline says they come from art director Jerry O'Flaherty, who might be in line to direct the film, which currently has no concrete timetable. But if it's as ambitious as some of the concept art, we might be waiting a while. As for what part of ThunderCats lore we should expect to see, the website says Paul Sopocy's script "was to follow Lion-O’s origin myth from young cub to his anointment as Lord of the ThunderCats."

Read the Script for the Coen Brothers' 'A Serious Man'

I hope you've had a chance to see the trailer for A Serious Man, the next movie for Joel and Ethan Coen. It is certainly not like another trailer you've seen this year, which you should expect most of the time out of the Coens.

One reason it migh not have been on your radar until this week is that unlike Burn After Reading, which filmed around the time the Coens were generating Oscar buzz for No Country for Old Men, there's no Clooney or Pitt this time around, they weren't shooting in a major metropolitan area, and there wasn't paparazzi coverage. With very rare exceptions, though, it is never the movie stars who make a movie great. What makes a film stand the test of time is the script. Always has been, always will be. The screenplay is the engine. Somehow, the visual effects of today will look outdated years from now, cameras will be even more high definition in a decade, actors will lose their luster, and pop culture references won't mean anything. But good writing is good writing, and it never ages.

James Cameron Talks About His Next Move

It seems almost absurd to ask James Cameron what he's working on next. If you haven't followed his career from Titanic to the most recent Comic Con, it hasn't just been Avatar for ten years. There's an IMAX movie called Ghosts of the Abyss in which Cameron investigated the wreck of the Titanic and showed us footage we never would have seen.

To get that footage, Cameron and his brother - a big tinkerer - developed underwater rover cameras, so before Ghosts of the Abyss, it was simply impossible to do what he did. And of course, for Avatar, Cameron has pushed the limits of technology, too, and if for no other reason, that's a compelling argument to pay to see Avatar this December. But MTV did ask Cameron what the next move will be, and he said he's looking at the manga adaptation Battle Angel Alita:

What the Hell is Up With This New 'Pandorum' Poster?

I have no effing idea what we're looking at here. Pandorum, the horror/sci-fi movie due out in September, has done a brilliant job with its marketing all year. The posters are strange and off putting, the trailers keep you guessing, and they've managed to not reveal too many secrets. And now there's this thing.

The movie is about a space ship crew that wakes up with no memory of who they are or where they are, and then the really weird stuff starts happening. We know they encounter other survivors on the ship, but we don't know exactly what role they play in connection to the guys we assume are the heroes, Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster. And then there's the thing that goes bump in the night, which I assume is on this poster, although I can't make out much more than goop on its hand. Is it somebody molting? Looks like it, as strange as that sounds. And there are those electrodes on the chest, which make me think it's someone waking up from one of those long-ass space sleeps, but it could just as easily be a prisoner put in the space sleep by the crew of the ship that now has no memory of what it's doing. Damn. I have no idea.
