'Transformers' Named Best Movie at MTV Movie Awards

The MTV Movie Awards saw a little bit of everything: Johnny Depp remarking that he's not funny in spite of winning best comedic performance, Seth Rogen and James Franco pretending to smoke weed before announcing an award for Iron Man...which was accepted by Robert Downey Jr., who battled drugs for more than a decade. It saw Tom Cruise present Adam Sandler the Generation Award (the highest honor you can get attending these ceremonies), and it was witness to Mike Myers and Dana Carvey getting the band back together, reuniting as Wayne and Garth from Wayne's World. Among the winners: Best Actress - Ellen Page (Juno) Best Villian - Johnny Depp (Sweeney Todd) Best Movie - Transformers Granted, this is an awards show geared for the younger folks. I get that. But explain to me how the hell National Treasure: Book of Secrets was a nominee for Best Movie? You've got I Am Legend, Juno, Transformers, Pirates, and Superbad. Anyone for No Country? There Will Be Blood? Bourne? What the hell is that nomination about. A better question might be why am I questioning the logic of the MTV Movie Awards. I guess I'm just upset that Kid Rock and Tommy Lee didn't get into another sissy boy awards show slap party.

Sandler, Apatow, Rogen to Make "Hilarious" Drama About Comedy

Former roommates Judd Apatow and Adam Sandler teamed up for You Don't Mess With the Zohan, which will probably do Sandler-like business when it hit theaters next week. But they won't wait long to work together again.

Sandler tells MTV that they'll be making a movie about life on the stand-up comedy circuit, which co-star Seth Rogen told a crowd at a Q & A is "hilarious by default." Sandler seems to have some misgivings about the concept. "I've got to write an act again. It's been a long time. I haven't done stand-up in, like, 10 years. Even more," admitted Adam. "That's why I want to kill Judd Apatow right now. I was so much happier doing nothing!" Sandler confirms that he'll probably try his act out in the comedy clubs of Los Angeles later this summer, trying to sharpen his skills. "You will see me bomb for 15 minutes and walk off [the stage] and punch Judd," Sandler said.

Flames Engulf Universal Studios Backlot

A terrible blaze ripped through the world famous backlot at Universal Studios early this morning, destroying several cityscapes and the King Kong attraction, though none of the original negatives or tapes in the vaults at Universal were damaged.Because of the importance of this story, we wanted to wait until more facts were uncovered before reporting it. As bad as it looks in the photo above, the fire was contained within a few hours, according to reports, so much so that the MTV Movie Awards were scheduled to proceed as planned at the nearby Universal Amphitheater. Lost in the fire, however, were Universal's New York street cityscape and the Court House Square, best remembered in Back to the Future. "Fortunately, nothing irreplaceable was lost," Meyer said. "We have duplicates." Universal Studios Hollywood and the Universal CityWalk were to remain closed on Sunday, but are believed to be reopening for normal business on Monday.

Red Band Trailer for the Ferrell and Reilly in 'Step Brothers'

After the less-than-miraculous box office of Semi-Pro, you have to wonder if Will Ferrell can get it back. Every comic actor has that movie that slumps in the middle of their hot streak (or at the end of their hot streak), but Ferrell has chosen wisely for his follow-up, it appears. He's re-teamed with Adam McKay and John C. Reilly for the first time since Talladega Nights, and that flick made about $150 million. I doubt this will do that well because it doesn't have the NASCAR crowd attached to it, but if it's as funny as the new red band trailer, Step Brothers has a shot. The only thing standing between this and a huge box office is the fact that it's released the week after The Dark Knight - July 25th, to be exact - so it might be forced out of the spotlight a bit. Still, Anchorman is Ferrell's best movie and nobody really had enormous expectations for that back in the summer of 2004, so maybe if nobody's giving this too much hype it just might surprise people. If not, well, at least this trailer's a riot.

'Sex' Overcomes Slow Saturday and Sunday, Wins Box Office

We've been tracking the performance of Sex and the City all weekend, and after all that - the $20 million Friday replaced by a $26 million Friday and what that could mean for Saturday and on through the weekend - turns out our initial hunch on Thursday was closest to its actual production.

Easily the number one movie in large part because of its very big Friday night, Sex and the City made $55 million in its debut, so says Box Office Mojo, a comfortable $20 million over some projections, and yes, that is the biggest opening of all time for a romantic comedy. Indiana Jones, which we suggested would make about $47 million prior to the weekend, did just that (OK, $46 million...), recovering from a rather puny Friday to actually win the box office on Saturday and Sunday. It has now earned over $215 million, so it should or at least could catch Iron Man in the summer sweepstakes.
